THE CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS TRADITION

China has one of the longest histories of continuously recorded martial arts tradition of any society in the world. At the Academy, we utilize two main styles in our training: the teachings of the Wutang and Shaolin Temples.

Wutang Kung Fu uses gestures and postures to trap the opponent. With names like Hawk, Tiger Springs from Den and Dragon, these techniques are remarkable sources for learning and mastering crucial self defense principles of the mind and body.

Shaolin forms are another major aspect of our training. These are dance-like in structure yet involve techniques that develop the student’s balance, muscle memory, power application, coordination and focus.

Wutang Mountain

Wutang (or Wudang) martial arts are greatly related to the Chinese native religion - Taoism. It is said that Zhang Sanfeng, a Taoist who lived in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) created Wutang martial arts.

The Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) saw the formal popularity of Wutang Kung fu. In order to promote Wutang Taoism all over China, Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty assembled 300,000 civilian workers to build 33 Taoist complexes in Mount Wutang.

It took them 13 years to finish the whole construction. Wutang Kung fu emphasizes the strengthening of bones and muscles and internal cultivation, and encourages the use of wit and skill to conquer the unyielding. It doesn't advocate initial attack but waits to trap the enemy.

The basic spirit is to value martial arts while at the same time upholding virtue; this has been advocated from generation to generation. Chinese martial arts are just like a knowledgeable teacher from whom people can learn a lot in order to survive in this complicated world.
